There was something almost philosophical about those sessions in front of monochrome screens. We were not merely using machines; we were learning to think with them. Commands typed on a terminal were not just instructions for a computer, they were small steps toward understanding how information, logic, and human reasoning could interact within a technological system.
At that time none of us spoke about artificial intelligence shaping institutions or societies. Yet, looking back today, it is clear that those early experiments with Unix networks were already revealing a deeper truth: technologies that extend cognition eventually transform the structures of the societies that adopt them.

Artificial Intelligence disrupts this equilibrium in a way that few technologies before it have done. What we are witnessing today is not simply the emergence of more sophisticated software. It is the gradual disappearance of intelligence as a scarce resource. AI systems can analyze thousands of documents, synthesize complex datasets, identify patterns across domains, and generate insights in seconds. Tasks that once required teams of analysts working for weeks can now be performed by a machine in a matter of minutes. But the most important aspect of this transformation is not speed or automation. It is the redistribution of cognition itself.

Individuals and small organizations can now access forms of knowledge that previously required large institutional infrastructures. This democratization of intelligence has the potential to empower individuals, but it also introduces new complexities regarding trust, accountability, and information quality.
Another emerging phenomenon is the rise of ecosystems where machines interact directly with other machines. In logistics networks, financial systems, research environments, and digital infrastructures, AI agents increasingly coordinate tasks, exchange information, and optimize decisions autonomously. Humans remain responsible for oversight and governance, but the operational interactions may occur largely between systems. This evolution introduces a new layer of complexity in governance: institutions must not only regulate human behavior but also design frameworks for machine-to-machine interactions that remain transparent and accountable.
Perhaps the most significant challenge, however, lies in the speed at which these transformations occur. Technologies evolve rapidly, but institutions often adapt slowly. Philosophers, scientists, and educators emphasized rational thought as the distinguishing feature of human beings. The emergence of artificial intelligence challenges this assumption. If machines can replicate certain forms of reasoning and analysis, human identity must be redefined in broader terms: empathy, creativity, moral responsibility, cultural meaning, and the ability to navigate ambiguity.
In many ways, the current moment reminds me of those early days in university laboratories when we were exploring the first networked computing systems. Few people outside those environments could imagine how deeply digital networks would transform society.
